No new Bremia races identified in 2026: What it means for UK lettuce growers

No new Bremia races identified in 2026

The latest update from the International Bremia Evaluation Board Europe (IBEB-EU) has confirmed that no new races of Bremia lactucae have been identified across Europe in 2026. The existing Bl:38EU to Bl:41EU races remain the principal threats, providing welcome reassurance for UK lettuce growers.

Race 2025 (n=327) 2026 to April (n=54) Bl:38EU 13% 20% Bl:39EU 5% 0% Bl:40EU 5% 2% Bl:41EU 13% 20%

While the prevalence of individual races has shifted slightly, the overall Bremia picture remains stable. This means resistance packages in current commercial varieties continue to provide effective protection against the races currently being observed across Europe.

Resistant varieties remain key

Although no new races have emerged, Bremia remains one of the most significant disease challenges in lettuce production. Effective management continues to rely on a combination of resistant varieties, good crop management and ongoing monitoring.

Genetic resistance remains one of the most sustainable tools available to growers, helping to reduce crop losses and improve reliability throughout the season. Continued breeding investment is therefore essential to ensure new varieties remain effective as Bremia populations evolve.

Varieties performing under current pressure

Through the Bejo-Elsoms partnership, UK growers benefit from continued investment in salad breeding and variety development. By working closely with Bejo on UK trials and variety selection, Elsoms helps ensure new and existing varieties are well suited to the specific requirements of UK salad production.

Our portfolio of varieties continue to demonstrate strong performance under current disease pressures, providing growers with confidence in an ever-changing production environment.

Looking ahead

The absence of new Bremia races in 2026 is positive news for the industry, but continued vigilance remains important. Through ongoing disease monitoring, breeding innovation and close collaboration with growers, the industry can remain prepared for future challenges while maintaining resilient and productive lettuce crops.
